how to work with my 12 year old green broke gelding paint to stop his habit of bucking?

i own a 12 year old green broke gelding paint that's around 14h but has never actuly been measured. he has lots of ground work. we got him about eight years ago. my parents hadn't had the time to work with him but now i do. he was used as a pony for the pony rides at the fair ever since he was broke for a saddle. we use a hackamore because he threw my father through a fence when we tried to ride him with a bit. i attepted riding him and we were fine until i asked him to trot. he began to buck. i fell off but was not injured. i attempted to climb back on and he imidatly started bucking again. i tried longeing him before riding but it didn't seem to help. i really don't want to have to get rid of him but my parents want to sell him if he can't be riden. i can't aford a trainer so any advice would be highly apreciated.

This horse needs to have a thorough medical evaluation by both a vet and a chiropractor before you ride or attempt to ride him again. Bucking is a pain response, not an act of aggression. Something is clearly bothering the animal- that's why he took your dad through the fence, and threw you off twice. You need to pay particular attention to back, hock, and leg problems, especially in the hind legs. Also, keep in mind that many horses and ponies are "cold backed", which means that it takes them a long time to relax their backs enough to be comfortable when being ridden. If you tend to bounce a lot at the trot, then that could aggravate this condition and cause enough pain that the pony feels the need to buck in self defense.

The next issue to address, assuming the horse checks out okay from a medical standpoint, is really two issues: the running away and taking or throwing your dad through a fence, and your tack and how it fits. For the first part of this, the horse needs to be seen and evaluated by an equine dentist. One of the single biggest causes of training problems like head tossing, rearing, shying, etc., is mouth or dental issues. How long has it been since this pony last had his teeth floated and checked? Has he ever been checked for the presence of wolf teeth in his jaw, or for other problems, such as an abscessed tooth, for example? Either of these conditions can cause a horse or pony excruciating PAIN. Wolf teeth in particular are bad, because they frequently are impacted and are often buried below the gum line near the bars of the horse's mouth, where the bit goes. If your horse has this problem, and per chance the bit hit one of these teeth when your dad tried to ride him, then that would explain right there WHY the horse threw your dad through the fence like he did. It WASN'T his fault, if this should turn out to be true. The same can be said for an abscessed tooth. The horse was in pain, and he was reacting to that pain- it's that simple. Depending on what you find, the horse may need to have wolf teeth removed, or perhaps need antibiotics from the vet to treat an abscess. The other part of this concerns your tack. You need to have someone help you check your tack carefully to be sure that it fits correctly and is not pinching or rubbing your horse anywhere. A girth which is pinching is a major cause of bucking just by itself, as is a bit that doesn't fit. You say you can't afford a trainer, but I bet you can afford to have someone from your local tack store come out and check the fit of your saddle and bridle. Many tack stores will provide this service for free or for a small fee if you buy your equipment from them. I would do some calling around in your area and see if you can find one that does this where you live. If you address all these issues, and the horse still acts this way, then it's time to get some help.
