Hi Bitting Help PLEASE???
Hi my 9 yr old bay pony gelding is fabulous in every way but he pulls alot while being asked to come on the bit what type of bit should I ride him in? He is currently being ridden in a plain snaffle but i have tryed a copper roller which helped a bit but he kind of shook his head up and down while on aloose rein...I have been advised to try a ruuber bit does anyone have any advice please????
I would say this is not a bit issue, but a giving issue. Try asking him to give side to side until he gives to the point of touching your leg/boot and with no resistance(will take several days at least of consistently working on it), you may want to start asking form the ground, pull a rein up to his whithers until he gives then release. Then you go back to asking him to give vertically - as soon as he gives, you release. The next time you ask him to hold it a couple seconds. Building on that you should be able to get him to hold the collected headset without having to hold it for him! If you rush it though it's not going to work.
