What does the Longhorn mean in Chinese culture?
China associates powerful meaning to animals. So what does the Longhorn (a type of cow with long straight horns) mean in China?
Well, the Ox is one of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac which pass in a 12 year cycle. People who are born in an 'ox' year are said to have characteristics associated with the animal. These include being Obstinate, Pouty, Truthful, Motivated, Friendly, Apathetic, Genuine, Quick-tempered.
There are also many chinese people who do not eat beef due to their traditional beliefs (in some cases taoism). The story behind it is that a man died and when he went to heaven he was told he would be reincarnated as a ox. He told the Gods to let him be anything but an ox saying that oxen faced a life full of toil in the fields, only to be killed the minute they grew too old to work. The Gods reassured him and sent him down to earth. It came to pass that the man slaved away tirelessly in the fields in his new form for many years and grew old. Then one day, the farmer who owned him too him out of the fields and slaughter him. The anguish of his dying cries rose to heaven and so moved the Gods to pity that it was declared that nobody should eat the meat of oxen.
In traditional chinese society, there were not that many large animals such as oxen and water buffalo which accounts for why they were not killed for food - they were needed for farm labour. Chicken and Pork were the main sources of meat in China.
