what would happen to a food web or chain if a population of 1 animal was to double?
what would happen to a food web or chain if the population of 1 animal was to double?
If the organism was a herbivore, then either A) plants would be over hunted, resulting in a lack of sustenance for the herbivore, and causing it to decrease back to normal size. Or B) the limiting factor (usually predator) would increase in size as well, since the ecosystem's carrying capacity will have increased.
If the organism was a producer, basically all species directly and distantly connected to it would temporarily increase in population.
If the organism was a carnivore, then it would over hunt its primary food source, run out of food, and begin to die of hunger. This would allow the food source's population to stabilize.
If the organism was a decomposer, then it would simply die off relatively fast due to a lack of food.
This is all true for a food web, food chains are imaginary.
