what is the object of the second billet and cinch on a western saddle?
I have an old roping saddle that I have used since I was nine years old. It was made in the 60's, it was given to me by my great aunt for my first saddle. It only has one billet and cinch. I see a lot of saddles that have two but the flank one is always real loose. What is the object of the second one, especially when it is very loose. thanks
The hind cinch helps to hold the saddle in place. Specifically to keep the back of the saddle from bouncing at faster speeds, and lifting when used for roping.
Most people don't know how to fit it properly and put it way to loose. When no one is in the saddle it should not be tight, but almost in contact with the horse. You should be able to pass your whole hand between the horse and cinch easily. When you get on, the saddle will "sink" down and provide a little more slack for the hind cinch.
If it is too loose it isn't doing anything for the rider at all. In fact, it can be dangerous as it is at a perfect place for the horse to get it's hoof caught if it simply kicks at a fly on its belly. If it is too tight, it will restrict movement in the chest. That can cause the horse to move poorly or become very agitated.
If your saddle has only one billet and cinch, and if the skirts are rounded, then it is not a roping saddle. Most roping saddles have a hind cinch to keep the saddle from tipping forward. Barrel and trail saddles don't always come with them.
