What is the difference between a gag bit and an elevator bit?
With a gag bit, the cheek pieces slide through the loops in the bit rings creating a nutcracker effect between the bit and the crown piece.
With an elevator bit, the cheek pieces are attached to the bit rings and do not slide. It does put pressure on the poll, but through leverage.
