What do you recommend for a first bit for a horse?
Im about to buy a bit for my horse but i don't know what to get him. he is quite behaved and he doesn't need anything all out and crazy. i don't show him, i just do pleasure western trail riding on my own time. I was thinking i simple snaffle bit, but I'm not sure how well that would do.
I have very soft hands and my horse has a normal softness mouth.
I've always been advised by everyone I've asked to go for a snaffle. Not a twisted wire or a shank snaffle or a tomthumb which can be rough, but just a snaffle, eggbutt, loose ring, D ring,or barrel ring are fine. It can be a rubber mouth piece(which are the most gentle, single mouth piece, or even a jointed. Copper causes the horse to salivate which is good for the bit to slide in the mouth smoothly. Try to stay away from just metal or stainless steel, it can stick to the mouth and become annoying and pinch the skin.Do not get thin mouth pieces, the thinner it is the harsher the bit is but it doesn't send any more of a signal to the horse than a regular wide mouthpeice.
Almost everyhorse is born with a soft mouth even if they are hard headed or resiliant they learn to work with the bit after a while if they have proper training. Even horses with hard mouths won't benifit from a more extreme bit, it just makes it worse in the long run.
Stick to snaffles. You always go to more extreme bits as the horse works its way up, but keep the light hands. I'd rather have a young horse getting bumped in the mouth by a gentle snaffle every now and then, then have a curb yanked in his mouth. Let him get used to pressure before you try putting something with leverage one him. Plus, stubborness can't be fixed by more force.
