Do I need a leather lead with a chain?

I have been looking into buying a leather lead to match my halter for the upcoming show season but all I've found are leather leads with chains.
I was wondering what the purpose of the chain is. Is it to help control the horse because my docile old mare does not need anything like that.
If I do get one with a chain, do I just clip it on the halter as if it is a normal lead rope, or do I loop it through the ring and clip it on to itself?
Please help!

usually they use the leads with chains on stalions for better control.... it should be fine to use with your mare as long as you're not to harsh.... i'd just clip it on like a normal lead....
