What's the softest bit on a horse's mouth?
I am working with an older horse who has basically been a pasture puff for the past few years, ridden very little and when ridden, with too much force. I am riding with a D-ring snaffle bit, with which I use very little pressure. I know he needs lots of work, but in the mean time, I was wondering if anyone recommends using a rubber snaffle bit. Is that more comfortable? I want to make training as positive an experience for him as possible. Thanks. Also, what are some good types of back support for an older horse, ie pads etc etc?
A rubber snaffle bit is good. Check his teeth, make sure they are okay. I use an air ride saddle pad. Make sure the saddle fits well. Place the saddle on his back without a pad-run your hand underneath to feel any pressure points...if all feels like there won't be any rubbing than a good saddle pad will do.
You can also tell if it isn't a good fit if there is a lot of tail swishing and head bobbing. After you take the saddle off if there is hair going in different directions-another sign of poor fit.
