The purpose of a rope halter?
What is the purpose of using a rope halter, and why does it work differently than a nylon or leather halter?
Rope halters are typically a training halter and really shouldn't be used for day to day handling or without proper instruction. The typical leather or nylon halter spreads pressure out evenly over the nose and poll where the rope has less surface space so it intensifies pressure. As a result, sharp shanks or jerks on the lead have three times the impact on the horse's head, something many people overlook since they consider the rope halter is "cool" looking.
I only use rope halters on horses that are pushy or like to barge when being lead or lunged as opposed to chain shanks over their nose (I use shanks as a last resort in controlling a horse). Even then, their leads or lines are always loose and I always use less force when correcting their bad behavior.
Think of the basic halter as a snaffle bit and the rope halter as a shanked bit. You can put more pressure on a horse's mouth in a dee-ring snaffle, but you have to put less pressure on a horse's mouth when he's wearing a five inch, shanked curb bit.
