Barrel Racing Tack.....?
What do you think about nylon tack sets for barrel racing? I plan on getting this set in purple for my sorrel QH mare...

The tie down, headstall, and breastcollar will be fine if you are just starting out in barrel racing.
That saddle pad, however, looks like junk. It looks stiff, bulky, straight-across the top (your horse's back is not a straight line, is it?) and not a good saddle pad for anything at all.
Now a few words about tack.
Tie down --> You should only use one if your horse truly NEEDS to have one. The majority of horses do not need one. Tie downs are only a training aid; they should NOT be used to fix a problem. Because problems need to be fixed from the source; not with a device. So, for example, you feel you need to use a tie down because your horse has a high headset ... no. Instead, you should be asking yourself WHY does your horse have a high headset. Are they in pain? Are you too rough with your hands? Is that just their conformation? Etc...
Breastcollar --> You need to be sure it is properly adjusted. The bottom part that clips to your cinch (between their legs) must be centered. If it is not, it can rub on the inside of one of their legs which is very uncomfortable. Also, the sides must attach high enough on the saddle so that it clears your horses shoulders. Since this particular nylon breastcollar is just straight with no curve in it, there is a chance it could go straight over your horses shoulder and interfere with their movement. Therefore, I do prefer the breastcollars that have a curve built-in so it helps to clear that shoulder. Also, make sure it is not too loose nor too tight.
There's nothing wrong with nylon tack sets. Like any other tack (leather or not) it just needs to be adjusted and fit properly.
You also should also invest in a brand name pair of sports boots for your horse. I say name brand because I have tried the cheap knock-off boots and they really are just junk because they do not fit well at all. Yes, name brand are expensive but if you take care of the boots, they will last for many years. Personally, I use Professionals Choice SMB boots on all four legs as well as bell boots on the front feet. Classic Equine is another good a well-respected brand as well.
And of course, your saddle should fit your horse well (not block their shoulders, should sit level, should have clearance under the gullet, etc)
