What works best for cleaning/restoring a 30 year old western saddle?
I was given an older western saddle, it was very nice back in the day, but has been sitting in a barn for about 20 years. It is all genuine tooled leather, with silver accents. I have silver polish for it, but the leather on both the saddle and the bridle is not just very dirty but very very stiff. There is no cracking on the leather that I have found. What are some good oils or soaps I can use on it? I have Kiwi Saddle Cleaner, the stuff in the little can but is there something better out there? The saddle was origionaly bought for $1,200 so I want it to look as good as new if possible. Any other tips are welcome. Thanks!
1. Murphy's Oil Soap mixed with water to wipe off all the dirt and get it clean. Castile soap also works well.
2. Leather Therapy, several coats, until the saddle is softer and supple. Apply more to rough leather than smooth- It's the rough that soaks it up the best.
3. Saddle soap to seal it up.
