Viewing a Horse Tomorrow, What to Ask Owners?
I am looking into buying my first horse and am going to view a horse at a stable tomorrow. He is a 15 yr Quarter Horse who has been used for trail riding. This is the type of place where people pay to ride the horse for pleasure on trails. What sorts of questions should I ask about the horse?
Why are you selling this horse and how long have you personally owned this horse?
Does the horse have any medical problems? Has the horse ever been lame?
How are the horse�s teeth? Have you ever had the horse's teeth floated?
Has the horse ever foundered?
What type of worming program are you using?
What type of riding do you do? i.e. trail, English, western, 3 day eventing, barrel racing, etc.
What do you feed the horse?
How is the horse kept? i.e. in a pasture, in a stall, in a small paddock, alone or with others.
Has the horse ever hurt anyone?
What type of training has the horse had? Does the horse have a trainer? Can I call the trainer?
How is the horse with the farrier? Can I contact the farrier?
How is the horse with the veterinarian? Can I contact the vet.?
Does the horse load into a trailer easily? How about unloading?
How long have they owned the horse and why are they selling him?
Does the horse have any current health problems or any past health problems that might return?
Has the horse ever had colic, ever foundered or ever tied up?
Is his temperament stable? Or does he have a changeable mood?
Does he have health papers?
Does he have a regular vet and would they mind you talking to the vet?
How old is the horse?
What has he been used for? Is he trained for a particular type of discipline?
Are his vaccinations current and has he been de-wormed?
Does he mind being de-wormed?
Does he have any vices, such as cribbing? Has he ever kicked or bitten anybody?
How does he get along with other horses, both in the pasture and on the trail?
Has he ever bucked a rider off or ran away with a rider?
How does he act if he's ridden without another horse on the trail? Is he barn sour and eager to get home?
Has he ever been shod and how does he respond to the farrier?
When were his teeth last floated?
How does he bathe and clip?
Is he registered? You can ask to see the papers.
Does he have a current Coggins test?
Does he need a special diet? Some horses founder on rich alfalfa hay or grain.
How is the horse with water? i.e. bathing, walking through it.
