Someone told me my Quarter horse was low in the whithers, what is good or bad about that?

I just bought this horse about a week ago, and he is absolutely beautiful. I understand what low in the whithers means, I'm just not sure how that will apply to his health, abilities and what type of things this makes him better suited for. I have seen tons of pics of quarter horses with the same "issue" this person said this to me as if it's a bad thing. Is it?

Having low withers, or no withers to speak of, is very common in Quarter Horses. I have a lovely, foundation bred, appendix QH mare who is what they call "mutton-withered", which simply means that she has no withers to speak of and is very round and deep through her chest area. The only problem I know of that can be caused by this trait is sometimes, fitting a saddle can be difficult. It can also be difficult to get a girth tight enough to keep a saddle on, because these horses are so round barrelled. Otherwise, it doesn't cause any health problems that I am aware of. As far as performance goes, most QH's are built "downhill" and tend to be heavy on their forehand or front end, especially when cantering. Dressage training, which emphasizes getting the hind end to take more of the load, is often very beneficial to these horses. But QH's can compete in a wide variety of events and disciplines- and their temprament and personalities make them tractable for just about any rider or riding style.

I have seen lots of QH's which are great jumpers, which play polo, and which do dressage and even speed competitions like eventing. On the Western side, the sky's the limit as far as what this breed can do- they were developed to be the qunitessential cow and ranch horse, and many of them have a lot of "cow sense" which makes them great as cutting horses. Most of the Reining horses I have seen are QH's or QH crosses- the breed is well suited to this sport too. Health issues are normally not much of a problem, these horses are easy keepers. Go ahead and enjoy your horse.
