What does it feel like when a horse is on the bit?

I have heard that the horse must take pressure on the reins a little bit and no slack in the reins can be seen. Because with my horse he will go vertical with his head but there will still be a little slack in the reins and so my sister says that is wrong for dressage or any english classes.

very hard to explain, but I will try. You should feel him round up his back, and start to feel more power come from his back end. His front should actually lighten in your hands(hence the slack, just take it up) The closest thing I can compare it to, is a horse ready to buck, but it is not that tense, more relaxed. If you can, get videos of dressage(some libraries have them) and watch them. Soon you will notice the diffrence. If money is a problem you could also see if a trainer in your area will let you watch lessons. I always learned more watching than actually riding.
