How hard is it to break a pony to harness?

I'm thinking about buying a shetland pony for my son to grow up with and became a part of our family. She is 10 years old very quiet, broken to saddle. She knows how to long rein and has been long reined for years on the roads and in the paddock. My question is do you think we will be able to break her to harness and how hard would it be?. Where I will be keeping her there is other little ponies broken to harness and I would have help teaching her. I've been riding since I was a teenager but Ive never done anything with driving horses before. I really want a pony we can drive so we can take our son out inthe cart which I know he'll love.

It is NOT a matter of 'if she long reins she is broke to harness- I have never heard such idiotic advice!

Next step is to get her use to driving harness and to get her pulling two poles fixed to her sides where the shafts would go. When these are accepted I always get them pulling a drag, three or four railway sleepers so they get use to having to pull and something dragging behind them.

Driving is great fun but not as easy as many think, to break a horse to harness. In the UK insurance for driving is higher by far than for most other equestrian sports - for a reason.
