Western Saddle and pad questions... experienced trainers/riders only please?
I have a Semi QH bar saddle that I use a Non Slip, contour waffle pad under. My Saddle Pad sits ok on my horse's back, but when I put the saddle on, it seems to bunch up underneath. I tug at it and try to adjust it, but it still seems like it doesn't lay flat. What is causing this? Also, when I'm lounging my horse and he's tacked up, the rear half of the saddle seems to bounce around a lot but the front seems secure... I am wondering if it's too tight or narrow through the front? Could it be that I need full QH bars? I do not use a rear cinch. Thank you for any help.
If the saddle is bouncing in the rear it there are several possible causes. Being too narrow is not one of them though because of the front to back curve a full QH bars may be the solution.
You may be putting the saddle too far back which drops the saddle off the withers and lets the back some up. This is one of the most common mistakes I have seen. I teach people to put the saddle on the horse by first placing it up where the front edge of the saddle is lined up with a vertical line through the center of the horse's shoulder. Then I have them move it back just a tad until it sort of falls into place. This is called the 'sweet spot' and is the correct place for the saddle for the horse you are saddling.
Another cause is too WIDE a bars which lets the bars sit down too low on the whithers are back come up (like a rocking chair). This can often be overcome with a little extra feed but sometimes needs a new saddle.
Another cause it that the saddle may be made for a horse with higher withers. Most people do not realize that there are two directions in which a saddle must have the right shape. One is across the saddle particularly in the bars, and the other is along the length of the saddle. If the saddle tree is curved for a high whithered horse it can rock on the horse like you are describing. In which case a full QH bars may well work for you because they are for mutton whithered horses with little or no whithers.
BTW a photo of your horse could help here. One unsaddled and one saddled would be tremendously helpful.
