Questions on Shows, Tack, etc... (Western)?
ok so im entering 4H with my Quarter horse and if you could answer any of these questions that'd be great.
1. In Western Pleasure, they ask you to walk, trot, lope, and what about jog? whats the difference between lope and jog? How do you teach your horse to jog?
2. Whats a way to calm your horse down, when unloading from a trailer in a new place, thats usually high energy?
3. What would be a good method to get your horse to move when told. Sometimes if my horse doesn't want to go anywhere he will not move, he just locks up and when i kick him on or rub his sides he throws his legs out.
4. Is cordura a good saddle brand?
5. At a Barrel Racing and Pole Clinic what is something i can expect to do that day?
6. what kind of reins are good for barrel racing leather or nylon/rope ones?

also what kind of bit should i use for a horse that is fairly hard headed and wont listen very well ( i use a curb bit)

It’s nice to see that you’re going to show your QH in 4H western classes… I remember doing that a long long time ago. 
Let me see if I can pass on some helpful information from all of my experiences.
1. Western and English tend to use different words for similar actions. In Western classes you slowly walk, jog and lope. In English they would ask you to walk, trot and canter. Similar actions – different labels. A jog is a slower, more collected trot. It’s very smooth and comfortable for the person riding – it makes it a ‘pleasure’ to ride. 
To teach a horse to ‘jog’ instead of the faster trot, you just help them slow their trot down by using certain commands (I use ‘eeeeasy’ and slow them down). Eventually you can get the horse to understand that there is a difference between jog and trot. I can go into more detail with training if you would like.
2. If your horse has been shown before or moved to new places he will calm down quicker than a horse that has never left home. The best thing to do when you arrive at a new place is to walk them around and investigate the area together. If a horse knows his surroundings he will probably feel more comfortable.
3. I don’t completely understand what you’re asking, but to get a horse to move I generally use a small riding crop to help me get the point across. With young horses I often have one around while riding to remind them that I want them to move forward. It comes from good ground work, like lounging in the round pen. They tend to respect the crops/whips if you use them properly.
4. I wouldn’t say it’s a bad brand, but I also wouldn’t use a cordura saddle for a Western Pleasure class - if that is what you’re asking. They are lightweight and fairly comfortable for both the horse and rider, but if you will be judged on traditional Western Pleasure rules you might want to see what the other competitors are using, because its probably not cordura. This would be fine for other events though… just check the rules/trends of the 4H classes.
5. They are probably going to show you the basic patterns and techniques that people use to run poles/barrels. I will probably be a slow process at first because that is the best way for them to understand completely.
6. I think this is really just a preference… but most people I see use leather. I personally like leather better. I don’t think I will lose my grip with it, but nylon tends to feel slippery. Personal choice though.
